Sophistication made accessible at home

Show off with hors d'oeuvres. Everyone loves 'em.

While some may prefer certain variations of ingredients, one thing you can guarantee is going to be a bonified hit at any party is hors d'oeuvres...not to mention the level of sophistication it will create.

Hors d'oeuvres can be simple. But how you assemble your hors d'oeuvres ingredient by ingredient, is key in learning how to make these beautiful appetizers at home.

DK Books offers help with this book collection called (what else?) Hors d'oeuvres, put together by Eric Treuille and Victoria Blashford-Snell who run a catering business as well. The cover is absolutely breathtaking and mouthwatering, and I assure you that it's not all a pretty face.

I'm sure you'll agree that hors d'oeuvres aren't just a practical way of feeding a crowd, but also a fun way to show off. The combinations are endless, but this book offers great recipes for everything from crostini's, tartlets, skewers and wraps. Make it as simple as you like, or as complicated, but you won't lose any of the sophistication.

Hors d'oeuvres by DK Books Canada offers lots of tips and advice on how to get ahead and how to store the food in advance, so you can manage your time and also enjoy entertaining as much as your guests will love the treats that you present to them.

One of my favourite recipes (and this doesn't have to be just for your parties) is Oven-dried Root and Fruit Chips. These pretty and colourful chips are made of sweet potato, beet, parsnip, apple and pear. None of these have to be peeled, so that's an extra bonus when it comes to prep time. Bake in the oven for 1-1/2 hours turning the slices over every 20 minutes. Sprinkle with salt and serve at room temperature, with or without dips.

6 Crostini Ideas:

  • goat cheese and roasted cherry tomato crostini
  • citrus avocado pureĆ© crostini
  • sun-dried tomato pesto crostini
  • pancetta and tomato with basil and almond pesto crostini
  • grilled eggplant with garlic and mint crostini
  • fresh tomato salsa crostini
Zucchini and saffron bruschetta is another take on the classic bruschetta. They have a herbaceous flavour and adding lemon juice and zest brings out the tastes of summer. So easy to prepare. Simply zucchini, baguette, garlic and saffron (the secret ingredient). The saffron just adds a wonderful level of sophistication that will keep your guests guessing the ingredients.

There's so much more, but I can't divulge all the recipes can I. As the summer comes to an end, and the season of Fall entertaining begins, think of Hors d'oeuvres by DK Books.
